What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a clear, alignment tray orthodontic system. Using a series of plastic aligners, patients are able to achieve their desired smile alignment in about twelve months of treatment compared with two years or longer with traditional braces. Patients who don’t have the time to dedicate to frequent orthodontic visits, those who have allergies or sensitivities to metals, and those who have sensitive teeth or gums may all benefit from orthodontic treatment with Invisalign.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Traditional braces use wires to place pressure on brackets attached to the fronts of teeth. Over the course of an average of 18 to 24 months, patients visit their orthodontist regularly to have their braces adjusted until they achieve their alignment goals. The Invisalign orthodontic system uses a series of clear aligners to shift teeth into the desired position. Each set of aligners represent your smile one step closer to the desired end result. You’ll wear each set of alignment trays for about two weeks. Then, exchange your current aligners for the next set in the series. You’ll need to visit our office every six to eight weeks, so we can check your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan. Most patients complete their Invisalign plan within 12 months.
How Much Does Invisalign Cost?
The cost of Invisalign orthodontics is comparable to traditional braces. The specific price will depend on your unique treatment plan, but for most patients, dental insurance will cover part of the cost of these treatments. Patients are also able to pay for the cost of Invisalign over the course of their treatment plan rather than all at once, which makes this orthodontic solution much more affordable for many patients.
Will I Need to Wear a Retainer?
Yes. When teeth are moved into a new position, the underlying supportive structures need to fuse with tooth roots to hold them in place. This takes time, and without a retainer, teeth may shift out of position again before the bone and soft tissue fuses with the roots to hold them in place. Luckily, we can now use clear retainers that look similar to your Invisalign trays for many patients. In most cases, you’ll need to wear the retainer all day for at least a year. Then, you can start wearing the retainer only at night, and we will keep working with you to further reduce the wear time once teeth are firmly fused in their new, ideal location.
