What Can I Do to Keep My Teeth and Gums Healthy?

Smiling family of fourThis is one of the most basic questions our patients have, and it’s a good one! There are a ton of things you can do at home including consistent brushing, flossing, and limiting your sugar intake, but you still need to come see us at least twice a year. Why? Because your brush and floss simply can’t clean every small nook and cranny in your mouth! At these preventive appointments, we’ll help you avoid dental issues in the first place so we don’t have to fix them later. To learn more about how we can give you a problem-free smile, keep on reading.

How Many Dental Checkups & Cleanings Do I Need Each Year?

Our own Dr. Jerry Bock agrees with the American Dental Association (ADA) on this one: patients of all ages should have at least two checkups and cleanings each year to achieve and maintain a healthy smile. During these visits, we’ll eliminate any plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth and gums, and Dr. Bock will look for common dental issues such as tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, and more. By coming in regularly, he’ll be able to catch any problems you have early and treat them before they can harm your smile.

How Can I Stop Grinding My Teeth?

Clear plastic mouthguard

Bruxism, or unconscious jaw clenching and teeth grinding, most often occurs while a person is asleep, which can make it particularly troublesome to stop on your own. Fortunately, we have a simple, comfortable solution that can protect your teeth from being damaged by bruxism, and it’s called a nightguard. This is a small, custom-made mouthguard you’ll only need to wear to bed, and it provides a barrier between your teeth to keep them safe while you sleep.

What Happens in an Oral Cancer Screening?

We recommend that everyone should have at least one oral cancer screening each year. Dr. Bock can perform one during your regular checkup, during which he’ll examine your lips, gums, tongue, throat, and neck for any signs of the disease. He’ll mostly just look at these areas, and he may palpate a few muscles to feel for any underlying growths. If he finds anything that causes concern, he can advise you on how to take quick and appropriate action.

Is There a Way to Make My Teeth Stronger?

There certainly is! With our fluoride treatment, we will paint a protective coating of fluoride varnish on your teeth. This will expose your teeth directly to this helpful mineral that has been shown to make them more resistant to both decay and cavities. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s perfect for patients of all ages!
